Wanted brilliant pre-sales engineer to join our team.

 

Pre-sales engineering is a huge part of driving customer success.  It’s hard. One reason is because it’s extremely difficult to build trust with the sales team.   Sales is paid on sales, and when they bring people on their sales calls they have to have absolute confidence that the person can add value to their customers.  Sales and customer success is at risk. You get this. This does not scare you.

 

You might not be the right fit.  

Pre-sales is a hard position to recruit for, but not impossible.   What makes it hard is that in our world the ideal person has the technical chops to do remediation and technical systems analysis as well.  We have the largest team in the world dedicated to the resale of used data storage equipment and third party support (Dell-EMC, NetApp, Cisco, HP, etc).  While VARs and OEMs only have to focus on the newest technology, we have to know how to troubleshoot and size technology for 3-7 generations of product - all over the phone.   

 

Imagine analyzing SPcollects, Autosupport or SysConfig files to help size a solution for a customer.   Think EMC VNX, NetApp, Data Domain, Isilon, Networking, Brocade, VMware, Backup applications - the datacenter stack.

 

What you’ll be doing—and why it’s an exciting opportunity

  1. Work directly with customers to design data center solutions.  Everyday we size upgrades, systems and solve technical challenges in the datacenter for clients you’d recognize (we have 1000’s).   You have the emotional intelligence, communication chops and intuition to challenge and guide customers in a respectful way.
  2. Work to develop our internal lab capabilities.   We have an awesome lab.  We need your help to make it even better.  We have goals to increase our ability to test Data Domain, Isilon and EMC Unity hardware.  You have the technical credibility to add value on day 1.
  3. Coach and mentor others, including engineering and sales.  We have a great engineering staff that is humble, open and works hard.  They want an a-player who can bring another unique skill set to the team who is willing to share (not hoard) what they know.   You love sharing what you know, because the more you share the better the whole team gets.
  4. Elevate and influence the culture as a part of our engineering team.  We saved the best for last.   We are super transparent, real, and run a process called Traction/EOS.   We define culture not as ping pong but as the ability to bring real issues to the surface, solve them well and create things customers want.    We need meaningful work and meaningful relationships to make this happen. If you aren’t adding to the culture, it won’t be a fit. We need you to be a culture raiser.  If you can’t build bridges with sales, marketing, finance and your colleagues it just won’t work.

 

Maybe you work for an end user and have top notch communication skills and are looking for your chance to get into pre-sales.   Maybe you work at an OEM or VAR and are looking for the right environment to call home. I have faith there is someone out there that would be excited and excel in this role.  

 

To succeed, you’ll need to have the potential to quickly become great at the following things

  • Pre-sales technical sales, with heavy storage and datacenter focus
  • Guiding, coaching and articulating solutions for customers
  • Partnering with sales to find, size and ultimately sell hardware on discovery calls
  • Supporting, remediating and troubleshooting technical issues
  • Finding new innovative ways to enhance our lab (Isilon, Data Domain, Unity testing)

Compensation and benefits

Salary is dependent on experience. We firmly believe that one great mind is better than one hundred mediocre ones, so we’re happy to pay the best rates for the best people.

Our office feels like California, is located off of Howell Mill Rd in Atlanta, GA.  Bill Withers is playing on the Sonos in in the background.
